Le 8 mars: La consultation SIDA

Mme Nuong (nom d’emprunt) se présente aujourd’hui à la consultation SIDA à l’hôpital de Siem Reap. Le voyage a été long. Elle vient des environs de Battambang à 200 kilomètres d’ici. La prise de sang montre que ses lymphocytes T4 sont au plus bas. Elle est gravement malade et ses défenses immunitaires sont largement entamées. 

C’est son mari qui l’a contaminée. Au Cambodge, les hommes mariés recourent régulièrement aux services de prostituées. Sans se protéger. Lorsqu’ils se découvrent séro-positifs, ils le cachent souvent à leur épouse et si elle devient malade à son tour il n’est pas rare qu’ils la quittent.

Lorsque je lui demande des nouvelles de sa famille, Mme Nuong fond en larmes. Son mari a disparu. Elle a du laisser ses 4 enfants dans leur petite maison, seuls, plusieurs jours, sans nourriture. Elle n’a plus de quoi les nourrir. Elle a vendu son champ de riz pour payer les charlatans qu’elle a d’abord consultés au début de sa maladie. Ses 2 filles cadettes sont elles aussi infectées par le virus du SIDA. L’histoire de Mme Nuong est d’une effrayante banalité.

Même s’il commence à reculer, le SIDA touche près de 3% de la population du cambodge.
